One of the coolest stuff I always dream to have is the IDEO Method Cards published by IDEO, the powerhouse of creativity and design thinking leading by Tim Brown. Too bad it only accept orders from online and the shipping cost to Malaysia costed the same as the price of the deck itself, which means I have to pay double in order for me to get this US$49 + US$50 shipping.

  • Web @ the Speed of 3.0

Many discussions were found on the web talking about Web 3.0, a.k.a Semantic Web, learning web, Artificial Intelligent Web. This topic has suddenly become a hot topic after last year Web 2.0 conference, when Eric (Google CEO) was asked on his point of view of Web 3.0. I think there are many post you can find online define the boundaries of Web 3.0, scopes, conceptually crafted of the idea, and we all know these visions going to happen pretty soon. People start to predict that Web 2.0 is just a temporary overlapping platform for Web 1.0 to evolve to 3.0. One year after the event, we look back the whole year and start to ask again, where is the Web 3.0? Have the web learnt? How far are we from the enlighten day of 3.0? How long will the next Web 3.0 companies rise and shine? What will be the promising Web 3.0 companies look like?

In Year 2000 when the internet bubble crisis, a lot of Web 1.0 companies burnt and quietly dissolved, and it make a mark of the end of Web 1.0 era; while raise the Web 2.0 companies era. This year, although the economic crisis was origin from the financial disorder, but when you find out from the newspaper, the other sector that impacted badly from this crisis was the Web 2.0 companies. 180,000 IT people lose their jobs (Challenger,Gray & Christmas). Sun is preparing to add additional 5000 people into the list. Web 2.0 companies will start to enter Ice Age where their food will getting lesser and lesser, and soon the companies dried up with fund and RIP. It is unfair for those new comers that yet to demonstrate their strengths and stickiness, but the circle will keep rolling and rolling. Yahoo! marked the Web 1.0 success stories, Facebook marked the Web 2.0 success stories, and who will soon be the rising stars for Web 3.0? One thing that I noticed that it never change be it in Web 1.0 or Web 2.0 is a business model that able make promising money. Amazon.com is the one so far had survived through the crisis. So my personal believe for Internet veterans including myself, ‘Stop thinking about fantasy, sell something and make money!’.

Next thing to add on, which is pretty interesting and encouraging for Asian is, the Web 1.0 & Web 2.0 are US driven, Silicon Valley driven; but Web 3.0 will be Asia driven. China will soon took over all countries and become the world largest English speaking country, and already the world largest internet users’ country. Twist you mind into business 101, what new demand you can create for the millions of China Internet users? What is the sweet spot, stickiness for China web surfers? After this, start to ask yourself, are you ready to switch your development, your interface design into Chinese? If so, welcome to Web 3.0 and get ready for the social deep dive into China market.
