• The Mobile Internet Report

    Morgan Stanley Mobile Future

As a senior exec who always need to compile reports, proposals and plan for clients and management, I make myself to always seek out to learn from others good writer in the market, reading great reports and proposals from great people and constantly learning from these people. I have to say that I am always admire to the Corporate America who can always assemble a large team of professionals to spend a huge amount of man hours to combile the reports for industries players. Some did this for living, where you pay the price tag of Hundreds of US Dollars to Thousands to purchase their knowledge, and they get paid from people purchasing their reports. I can understand this perfectly. But somehow, we cant understand that there are firms that do all the same, and they open up their reports for people to download for free. Just imagine, a team of 20 more researchers with PhD in economics, hundreds of man hours from these professionals, and their works are distributing away for FOC online… one I admire most is always from JP Morgan & Morgan Stanley. In early Y2009, I get their report on What next of 2009 Internet Trend, giving good review on all the top public trade Internet company in Nasdaq. Every quarter, I get the report on Internet Trend Review, and what surprise me is this Mobile Internet Report. A stack of 600 over pages of Mobile Internet Report really going to make me spend days to finish reading it. A very interesting and resourcesful review on Mobile Trend, Mobile Internet, Mobile eco-system, and how those large players in the market going to shape the future of Mobile Internet battlefield. No doubt big new players such as Apple, Google, & Microsoft are aggresively entering the market, and existing players such as Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericson are rushing to come out their own mobile aps platform after realising the power of Apple Aps Store (which recently just celebrate 1 year anniversary?!) … make millions of purchase of application with months. What’s more? 10Billion mobile devices by Y2020, are we ready to capture this market? :) Read by yourself for this report, and you will fall in love with this report….

  • Asia next big wave – e-Commerce in Rising

Rose Tsou, managing director for Yahoo’s Asia region

According to the latest report announced from Yahoo, globally, 95% of Yahoo’s revenues come from advertising, though the online giant sees scope to grow its non-advertising revenues in Asia, based on success the brand has already had in Japan. Revenues from Yahoo’s shopping and auction services have grown 30% so far this year, and it continues to see more upside.

Overall, e-commerce revenue from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan makes up around 15% of Yahoo revenues for its Asia region, comprising Greater China, Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, and is expected to increase by 17% next year.

“I took a team to Japan and we learned a great deal about payment infrastructure, fraud prevention,” says Rose Tsou, managing director for Yahoo’s Asia region. “We learned a lot about the commerce space. They also have a different environment that makes mobile and MMS content become so robust. I think that’s another area we’re going to learn from Japan.”

As a minority shareholder in Japan through a venture with Softbank, the company lacks operational control of its business, but this is where Yahoo the brand is making the most headway – also enjoying pole market position with Yahoo Messenger as well as in the search market.

There is no doubt that e-Commerce is going to penetrate heavily into Asia, but will this only happen on current developing countries like China and India, or other countries located in Asia too, such as South East Asia, or Middle East? Looking at over 200mil of Internet users in South East Asia, will that create a substential economic scale of demand market space? It is worth for the current e-commerce operators to think twice :)

  • e-Commerce retail slowdown

Recently, there is indication from various reports showing the US e-Commerce retailing is slowing down, starting from Q1 Y2009.

ComScore Report on Quarter to Quarter US Online Retail Volume

Will it rebound during this Christmas season, or it will continue to stay stag, as during last quarter the US unemployment rate has hit the record high of 10.2%, a record since 1980s. Will this impact the current OFW who working in US, and further to impact the remittent from OFW in US back to Philippines during this Christmas? In Y2008, there are total US$14bil coming back from OFW in US, where more than US$5bil during the Christmas season.

On the other hand, there is estimate Php 4bil total online transactions in Philippines e-Commerce industry, with a total of 24 to 28million Internet users in Philippines, and 80% are below age of 30. This industry will be in growing for the next five years, when the estimate Internet users will eventually reach 40mil. It will be a new internet market that can not be neglected, the highly penetrated market for social media and social networking sites, where I personally believe the e-Commerce industry in PH will be in 2 times or 3 times folds by next two years.
